
Spartans Upset No. 9 Bucs On Senior Night
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa men's basketball team avenged a road loss, as they upset the No. 9 Barry University Buccaneers by a final score of 73-63. This contest also marked the last regular season game, as well as senior night for seven Spartans.
Tampa improves to 18-9 overall and 10-6 in conference play, while Barry falls to 22-4, and 13-3 in conference play.
Senior Eugene McCrory led the charge for the Spartans, as he collected a double-double on the nigh. The UT big man put up 18 points, while hauling in a career high 15 rebounds. Senior Jordan Davis also added a double-double as he recorded 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Sophomores Austin Rettig contributed with 11 points and nine rebounds, while Matt Johnson added 10 points and eight assists.
Juan Ferrales led Barry as he put up 13 points.
Tampa was able to use an all around effort to defeat Barry. Eight different Spartans recorded points on the night, as they were able to shoot 50.9% (22-55) from the field. On the defensive side, UT held BU to their lowest point total on the season, as they were only able to shoot 34.8% (24-69) from the field.
Tampa held a lead as big as 19 in the second half before Barry was able to cut down the deficit to just four with 3:20 left play. After that UT was able to break the press and get a couple layups and make crucial free-throws to seal the victory.
The Spartans outscored the Bucs 40-18 in the paint.
Tampa will be in action on Friday, as they take on Nova Southeastern in the first round of the Sunshine State Conference Tournament. The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
