Early Run Lifts Tritons Over Spartans
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd Tritons started the game with a 13-1 run as they lead wire-to-wire in an 81-58 victory over the Tampa Spartans. Tampa falls to 3-5 and 0-3 in the SSC for the season. Eckerd moves to 8-1 and 3-0 in the SSC.
Pat Bacon lead Tampa with 23 points, while Marcel Robinson added 11, and Austin Rettig scored 10.
In the first half of play the Tritons shot 41.7 percent (12-29) from the field, while UT was held to 35.5 percent (11-37). Tampa was unable to knock down a three-point attempt in the opening 20 minutes, as they went 0-7 in the half. Tampa was able to chip away at the Eckerd lead, as they were able to pull within six, but that would be the closest UT would get to EC for the remainder of the contest. The Tritons would hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to send them into the break at 37-26.
Rettig and Bacon would lead the Spartans in the first half with nine points each.
In the second half of play the Tritons would continue their dominance, as they outscored the Spartans 44-32 in the half. EC shot 46.4 percent (13-28) in the half, while UT shot 30 percent (59-30). Tampa was able to connect from long range, as they made five three-pointers in the second half.
Tampa will be back in action again on December 12 when they travel to play Long Beach State.
