
Spartans Set To Host Tampa Classic
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa Spartans are set to hold the Tampa Classic this Saturday and Sunday. Playing in the classic will be the Eckerd Tritons, Tiffin Dragons, and Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds.
On Saturday, the games will be played at Eckerd College as Eckerd plays Eastern New Mexico at 2:00 and Tampa plays Tifin at 4:00.
On Sunday, the Classic moves to the Martinez Center, as the Tritons play the Dragons at 2:00 and the Spartans host the Greyhounds at 4:00.
Tampa comes into the weekend with a record of 3-6. Last time out the Tampa traveled to Long Beach, California, where they fell to the Long Beach State 49ers. Marcel Robinson led the way for Tampa, as the sophomore connected on five three-pointers en route to 15 points.
Leading the way for UT is freshman guard Pat Bacon. Bacon is averaging 20.4 points per game, which ranks fifth in the Sunshine State Conference. Bacon is also adding 3.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game.
Austin Rettig and Robinson are also averaging double figures, as they are scoring 14.3 and 11.2 points per game respectively. Rettig leads the team in rebounding with 6.6 per game and Robinson is close by with 6.0 rebounds per game.
Eckerd comes into the classic at 10-1 and they are currently on a 10 game winning streak. Drushaun McLarun leads the way for the Tritons as he is averaging 16.5 points per game.
Eastern New Mexico enters the tournament at 3-6, as they lost their last game to Florida Southern. John Gilliam leads the way for the Greyhounds, as he is averaging 18.4 points per game.
Tiffin enters the weekend at 4-5 as they won their last game against Ferris State. Tony Kynard is leading the Dragons with 17.8 points per game.
This will be the first meeting between Tampa and Eastern New Mexico. The Spartans are 1-0 against the Dragons with their only meeting in 2000.
Tampa will be in action again on December 19 as they play Tiffin on the campus of Eckerd.
