Tampa Finishes Season At SSC Tournament
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The University of Tampa golf team concluded its 2009-10 season with a seventh-place showing at the 2010 Sunshine State Conference Tournament. A total of 17 teams competed at Grande Oaks Golf Course.
Florida Southern College captured the men's title with a score of 835, trailed by Barry University (840) and host Nova Southeastern University (843). Barry's Carlos Velez captured the individual championship after firing a 203 with a trio of sub-70 rounds.
The Spartans finished the event with an 880, after a final round score of 294. UT notched a 288 and 298 in the first two rounds on Monday.
Kyle Roy led Tampa with a 214, placing 13th overall. The junior from Syracuse, New York clubbed a team-leading 71 in both the first and third rounds.
Nicolas Jutigny (220), Kris Shane (221), Eric Snow (227) and Taylor Noel (229) also participated for UT.
The Spartans finish the 2009-10 campaign with 11 top-10 finishes in its 12 events. Head coach Rick Christie's Spartans notched a second place finish at the Spartan Invitational and also placed third as the Saint Leo Invitational.
UT is set to return four of its five starters in 2010-11, including its top-three players by average. Each of Tampa's four returning players from 2008-09 registered an improvement from their previous season by average.
