
UT Rides School-Record Third Round to Number Three Finish in Regular Season Finale
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. - The University of Tampa men's golf team enjoyed a stellar showing in Tuesday's final round at the Battle at the Shores, setting a school record with a 269 to rise to third in the overall standings.
Held at the Normandy Shores Golf Club in Miami Beach, Fla., a course stretching over 6,733 yards, the Tampa team shared a tie for third place with Barry. Both teams finishing with a total score of 843, nine strokes under par.
Tampa started the tournament with a first-round score of 289, followed by an improved 285 in the second round, and concluded with a remarkable 269 in the final round, marking the best team score for a single round in the tournament and a school rec ord with a -15 in the finale. This strong finish allowed them to climb the leaderboard and secure their position among the top teams.
Alex Mercier led the Tampa contingent with a total score of 209, four strokes under par, tying for 9th place.
Freshman Jonathan Garbely closely followed, tying for 11th with a score of 210, three under par, highlighted by a superb 67 in his final round.
Brendan Dunphy and Jonty Marshall also had standout performances, finishing with scores of 211 and 215, respectively. Leonardo Bono played the first two rounds before withdrawing for Tuesday's final round.
The tournament was won by Nova Southeastern, finishing with a total score of 835, seventeen strokes under par. The individual champion was Alex Heck from St. Leo, who carded a ten under par total of 203 over three rounds.
Next up for head coach Gary Hilton and the Spartans is the 2024 Sunshine State Conference Championships, which is scheduled for April 21-23 at Osprey Point Golf Course in Boca Raton, Fla.
