Calleja and McMahan Named DSC Players of the Week
TAMPA, Fla - After playing a key role in Tampa's two wins last week, Trevor Calleja and Joey McMahan have received the Deep South Conference defensive and freshmen Player of the Week Awards. The Spartans began the week defeating MIT 13-9 and followed that up with a 13-11 road-win over Lenoir-Rhyne.
Calleja was the defensive player of the week after going 29-41 on faceoffs and picking up 18 ground balls. Calleja had a career-game against MIT winning 19 faceoffs and picking up 13 ground balls. In that game he also scored a man-down goal to help the Spartans to victory. He followed that up going 10-18 on faceoffs and picking up five ground balls in the win over Lenoir-Rhyne. For the season Calleja has a .589 faceoff win percentage.
McMahan was the freshmen player of the week as he played a vital role in the Spartans wins. Against MIT, he scored the first goal of the game to help Tampa take an early 1-0 lead. He followed that up netting three goals in the win over Lenoir-Rhyne. Both his second and third goal tied the score in the game, which Tampa eventually won. He also tallied three ground balls on the week. McMahan leads the Spartans with 12 assists and is second on the team with 23 points.
The Spartans will host Rollins College in a DSC match-up Friday, April 5, at 8 p.m. This game will serve as the grand opening of the Naimoli Family Athletic and Intramural Complex. Prior to the game there will be the dedication of the complex and the Spartans will honor their seven seniors.
