Three Named to DSC All-Tournament Team
WINGATE, N.C. - University of Tampa attacker Kyle Hemrick and midfielders Greg Griffo and Ryan Becker have been named to the Deep South Conference All-Tournament team announced Tuesday afternoon.
In Tampa's two DSC tournament games, Hemrick netted eight goals and two assists. Against Saint Leo, he tallied a hat trick and two assists, all in the first half, helping the Spartans jump out to an 11-5 lead. He followed that performance up by scoring five goals, tying a program-high for most goals in a game, in the championship game. Hemrick scored the first three goals of the game to help the Spartans take a 3-0 lead after the first quarter. He also picked up three ground balls for the tournament.
Griffo, the DSC player-of-the-year, tallied five goals, four assists, and three ground balls for the Spartans. Against Saint Leo he tallied a game-high six points (four goals and two assists). Griffo netted two goals and assisted one other as part of a six goal first quarter, which set a program record for most first quarter goals. He tallied one goal and two assists, including assisting the game tying goal, against Catawba.
Becker played a key role in both of the tournament games. He netted a hat trick in the semi-finals game against Saint Leo. Less than a minute into the game Becker scored the first goal of the contest. He also scored a man-up goal later in the quarter. In the championship game Becker tallied one assist and one ground ball. He assist came in the third quarter when he found Hemrick for a man-up goal to put the Spartans ahead 8-6.
The Spartans, the top seed in the south region, defeated Saint Leo 18-8 in the semi-finals before bowing out Catawba 10-9 in overtime in the championship game.
The Spartans will return to action later this week when they travel to Colorado for the final two games of their regular season. They will face Adams State on Thursday, April 18, at 5 p.m. and then play Colorado Mesa on Saturday, April 20, at 3 p.m.
