Conor Whipple Named Second-Team Academic All-American
Senior Conor Whipple becomes the first men's lacrosse player in program history to become an Academic All-American.
AUSTIN, Texas – University of Tampa's Conor Whipple was named a second team Academic All-American for the first time in his collegiate campaign. He earned a spot on the 2017 Academic All-America® Division II Lacrosse team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Whipple becomes the first Spartan in program history to receive this honor.
The Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2016-17 Division II Academic All-America® teams program.
Whipple, a senior attackman from Tampa, Florida, is a sport management major with a 3.51 G.P.A. He helped Tampa finish its season with a 15-5 record, reaching the NCAA National Semifinals for the second year in a row.
He earned first team All-Sunshine State Conference honors for the fourth year in a row, as well as snagging SSC Player of the Year for the third time in his career. After a stellar performance in the SSC Tournament, it was no surprise when Whipple was named the tournament Most Outstanding Player. Leading the team in assists with 60, he also scored 39 goals on the season. In addition to his accolades within the SSC, he was also the recipient of the Tampa Sports Club Male Athlete of the Year, was a USILA first team All-American, and earned the DII ADA Academic Achievement Award.
The remainder of the second team is comprised of Dion Dressens (swimming) of Queens University of Charlotte, Ryan Dyck (golf) of Lindenwood University, Philip Harrison (golf) of Livingstone College, Dylan Lavner (volleyball) of Limestone College, Michael Maciel (tennis) of St. Mary's (Texas) University, Jean-Baptiste Mateo (tennis) of Lynn University, Joseph Moorman (water polo) of California Baptist, Raul Quevedo (tennis) of Young Harris College, Robert Poole (volleyball) of the University of Mount Olive, and Brett Velasquez (wrestling) of St. Cloud State University.
Twenty-four (18 women, six men) on the CoSIDA Academic All-America Division II At-Large Teams have a 4.00 G.P.A. The CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division II Women's At-Large First Team had an overall 3.90 G.P.A. while the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division II Men's At-Large First Team had an overall 3.87 G.P.A.
