PENSACOLA, Fla. - Devin
Shaw had a career game in the opening round of the NCAA II Men's
Soccer Championship, scoring two goals to lead the Spartans (12-3)
to a 2-1 victory over Lynn University (14-3-1). Tampa advances to
the second round of the tournament for the first time since
2001.
Tampa struck first in the 24th minute, when Bobby Durham put a long
ball through to Shaw on a breakaway. Shaw scored again in the 47th
minute, putting a rebound in from the top of the penalty area for
his career-high second goal of the match.
Lynn's Lee Porter added a late goal in the 77th minute to cut
Tampa's lead to the final margin of 2-1 off a pass from Nano
Short.
"Our team handed themselves well," said Coach Adrian Bush. "Lynn
can come at you with a lot of flurries, but we stayed disciplined,
especially in the last 15 minutes."
Ryan Thompson tied his career-high with seven saves against the
Fighting Knights, allowing just the one goal. Ricardo Cardoso and
Ryan Maxwell led the team with three shots each, despite being
outshot 18-10 by the Fighting Knights.
"To beat Lynn once is tough," said Bush. "It is unbelievable to
beat them three times, and I am so proud of our team."
"I cannot believe I scored twice," said team-captain Devin Shaw. "I
have never scored two goals in my life. I have never even shot it
that well."
Tampa returns to the pitch on Sunday to take on Montevallo in the
second round of the NCAA II Men's Soccer Championship. Kickoff is
scheduled for 2 pm ET.
