Saint Leo Hands #25 Tampa First Loss of Season
SAINT LEO, Fla. - The 25th ranked University of Tampa (4-1-1) men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to Saint Leo University (4-2) in its Sunshine State Conference opener.
The Spartans took a 1-0 lead following 29 minutes of scoreless play when Ryan Maxwell scored unassisted. The goal occurred at 29:18, giving Tampa a lead heading into the half.
Saint Leo scored just 1:11 into the second half when Jonathan Glenn tallied a goal from Brandon Whitsett. The Lions then added unassisted goals by Glenn and Eusebio Montoya in the 55th and 80th minutes respectively.
Ryan Thompson started in goal for Tampa and held strong while facing 20 shots. He also finished the evening with five saves.
UT concluded the contest with six shots, including four by Pascal Milien. Maxwell and Lister Warren each recorded a shot as well with Maxwell notching the lone shot on goal for UT.
Tampa now heads home where it will face a tough test on Friday when 18th-ranked West Florida comes to town. The game is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Pepin Stadium. UT will offer live stats through www.tampaspartans.com.
