TAMPA, Fla. - The ninth-ranked University of Tampa Spartans overcame a first half red card to take down Sunshine State Conference foe Rollins College by a score of 2-0. The win brings Tampa's record to 7-2-1 overall and 2-2 in league play, while the Tars drop to 5-6, 2-2 in the SSC.
Near the end of the first half, Tampa's Ryan Maxwell was issued a red card for a foul on Rollins' Simon Jensen. Forced to play the second half a man down for the second consecutive game, the Spartans overcame the disadvantage to pull out the win.
Tampa could not muster much against the Tar defense in the first half, generating just one shot on goal. Spartan goalkeeper Ryan Thompson made four saves on the Tars in that half to keep the game even.
Late in the second half, Pascal Milien excited the crowd of 807 with an array of moves. In the 86th minute, Milien assisted teammate Mike Bethel to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. He then answered with an unassisted breakaway goal at 88:26 while beating the Rollins goalkeeper, who ran towards Milien in an attempt to stop the breakaway.
Thompson finished the contest with five saves while recording his fifth shutout of the season.
Tampa returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Palm Beach Atlantic. Game time is 7 p.m. at Pepin Stadium.
