
No. 24 Tampa Opens Onslaught Against Clayton State
Spartans win third straight match to start season.
TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 24 University of Tampa (3-0) men's soccer team needed 35 minutes to net its first goal, but ran past NCAA South Region foe Clayton State University (0-3).
Senior Jason Collister scored in the 35th minute to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead, as freshman Lewis Sugden assisted on the eventual game winner.
Collister answered in the 55th minute on a goal from freshman Knut Soeren Hovet. Three minutes later, Sugden assisted his second goal of the evening when he found Jake Winship for the score.
The fourth and final UT goal of the evening came in the 73rd minute off a corner kick from Bay Downing. The senior found teammate Chris Dusabe in the box, who headed it in to give the Spartans a commanding 4-0 lead.
Freshman keeper Jake Richards earned his second consecutive start of the season, picking up his first collegiate shutout. Richards finished the evning with one save.
UT turned in a dominating effort, outshooting the Lakers 19-2. The Spartans also had an 11-0 advantage in corner kicks.
After playing three home games to start the season, UT hits the road to face Warner University on Tuesday at 7 p.m., and concludes the week at Nova Southeastern University in its Sunshine State Conference opener on Saturday at 7 p.m.
