Tampa Shuts Out Saint Leo to Move Up SSC Standings
Spartans finish SSC play with 6 league wins.
ST. LEO, Fla. - The University of Tampa men's soccer team notched a 3-0 victory over Saint Leo University in its final regular season Sunshine State Conference matchup.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Tampa 3, Saint Leo 0
Records: Tampa Spartans (7-3-2, 6-2-2 SSC), Saint Leo Lions (2-11-1, 1-8-1 SSC)
Location: University Soccer Field | St. Leo, Fla.
All-time Series: Tampa extended its lead in the all-time series to 34-13. Tampa also broke a string of four straight losses to the Lions as the victory was the first on the road over Saint Leo since 2010.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
1st Half | The Spartans scored the first goal of the match on a Lewis Sugden score in the 31st minute.The lead would be extended to 2-0 in the 37th minute when Markus Woldsund scored for the Spartans. Sugden assisted on the goal, which came off a corner kick. The Spartans dominated the scoresheet in the first half, outshooting the Lions 11-4.
2nd Half | Tampa added its third goal of the contest in the 62nd minute when Juancho Fernandez connected on an unassisted score. Each team recorded six shots in the second half.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Tampa held a 17-10 advantage in shots.
- The Spartans tallied nine shots on goal, with the Lions being credited with three.
- Sugden recorded his third two-point match in the previous five.
- A freshman, Woldsund has now tallied three goals in SSC play.
- Goalkeeper Jake Richards notched his fourth shutout of the season, finishing the contest with three saves.
- Tampa took four corners compared to two for the Lions.
- Fouls were 18-12 in favor of Tampa. Saint Leo was issued the lone yellow card.
- UT now sits in second place in the SSC standings with 20 points. Palm Beach Atlantic has clinched the league title and will host the SSC Tournament. Florida Tech is currently third with 18 points, and will need a victory over PBA tom pass the Spartans. The top-two teams receive first-round byes in the tourney.
UP NEXT:
Tampa travels to Rome, Ga., to face Shorter University on Saturday at 3 p.m., in a South Region matchup.
