Spartan Coach, Runner Highlight Silver Anniversary Team
ORLANDO, Fla. - The Sunshine State Conference announced its Silver Anniversary Team for men's and women's cross country, naming the top 11 female and top 12 male runners over the past 25 years. In addition, Tampa Head Coach Jarrett Slaven was named the Top Women's Coach while UT alum Elias Gonzales was chosen the Top Male Runner. Allison Macsas was also selected to the women's team.
Gonzales remains Tampa's only All-America in men's cross country and is one of just three male runners to win two SSC Runner of the Year awards, earning the honor in 2002 and 2003. He claimed medalist honors at the SSC Championships both years, before going on to earn All-America accolades in 2003. Gonzales currently holds school records in both the 8K and 10K events.
Macsas is a four-time All-SSC first team selection and the only runner, male or female, to win SSC Runner of the Year three times. Tampa's only four-time All-SSC runner, male or female, Macsas captured medalist honors at the 2003, 2004 and 2005 SSC Championships, while also finishing fifth at the 2002 SSC Championship. Tampa's only All-American in women's cross country, Macsas earned All-America accolades in both 2003 and 2004, as she raced to eighth-place and ninth-place finishes at the 2003 and 2004 NCAA Championships, respectively. Macsas is the holder of two school records, having the fastest 5K and 6K times ever posted by a UT runner.
Slaven has directed the Tampa cross country program since 1999. During his eight seasons at the helm, the Spartan women have claimed four SSC championships, capturing the trophy in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. He has won SSC Women's Coach of the Year five times, earning the distinction every year from 2001 through 2005.
