Tampa Women Run to Second Straight Top Finish, Win USF Open
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa men's and women's cross country teams competed in the USF Open at The Claw, with the Spartan women taking first as the UT men were fifth.
The UT women placed ahead of the pack in the 5K while recording 57 points to edge Central Florida (61). South Florida (88), Embry-Riddle (106), Florida Atlantic (140), Miami (146), Nova Southeastern (171), Florida International (204), Saint Leo (244) and Pasco-Hernando Community College (263) also made up the women's field.
Freshman Laura Yarrow finished sixth overall with a time of 19:40.43. She was one of five Spartans in the top-20, which also included Kaia Hampton (ninth, 20:00.30), Kelly Hagan (10th, 20:00.85), Christa McLeod (17th, 20:31.66) and Iolani Scanlan (19th, 20:34.36).
Danielle Kissel was 21st (20:38.61) as Liz Anthony (33rd, 21:12.20), Kaitlyn Martin (35th, 21:17.38), Emily Scott (38th, 21:31.66), Sarah Waller (65th, 22:11.39), Vanessa Righeimer (85th, 23:01.47) and Kristin Kelly (95th, 24:08.57) also competed for head coach Jarrett Slaven.
Florida A&M won the men's 8K race with 59 points, followed by Nova Southeastern (75), Embry-Riddle (79), Miami (90), Tampa (101), South Florida (126) and Florida Atlantic (154).
Mike Zwijacz led all Spartans, running to a 12th-place finish with a time of 27:51.38. Freshman Peter Licari placed 14th after being clocked at 27:59.58 while Tory Webb was the third Spartan in the top-20 with a 19th-place showing and time of 28:15.53.
The Tampa lineup also featured Jake Bailey (28th, 28:36.95), Charles Toledo (33rd, 28:54.93), Lewis Price (39th, 29:09.64), Geremy Dewitt (41st, 29:17.64) and Mike Leone (49th, 30:4100.29).
Tampa will next travel to Lakeland on Friday for the Florida Southern Invite.
