Spartans Win Fourth Race of Season at FSU Invite
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The University of Tampa women's cross country team won its fourth race of the 2014 season as it led all NCAA Division II schools at the Florida State Invitational. The Spartan men also competed and placed 10th in the D2 field.
In the women's race, the Spartans totaled 85 points to top the 13-team field. Sunshine State Conference opponent Saint Leo followed the Spartans with 102 points as Nova Southeastern and Florida Southern also competed and finished eighth and 13th respectively.
UT's men tallied 229 total points. SSC opponent Florida Southern won the Division II race with 74 points. A total of 18 teams ran in the event.
Chantalle Blundell led the Spartans once again, finishing seventh overall among Division II runners. Her 5K time was clocked at 18:46.25. Junior Danielle Kissel joined Blundell in the top-10 as she was ninth with a time of 18:50.85.
Also running for the winners of the Division II race were Aislinn Sroczynski (17th, 19:20.36), Elaina Cancello (21st, 19:33.79), Claudia Cancello (31st, 19:52.55), Kayla Sullivan (36th, 20:06.37), Rachel Higgins (38th, 20:09.53), Brianna Jackson (61st, 20:41.41), Mary Alice Smoot (68th, 20:49.84) and Ariana Sotorpolis (75th, 21:04.15).
Geremy DeWitt's 27th-place effort led Tampa as the junior ran the 8K in 26:46.89. Other Spartans included Mitch Arnold (50th, 27:26.78), Brendan McGonagle (63rd, 27:42.94), Jake Poore (69th, 27:49.32), Phil Robbins (76th, 27:55.61), Matt Hoffman (94th, 28:31.70), Aaron Oldanie (97th, 28:36.67), Tony Cruz (110th, 29:00.29) and Sam Anderson (115th, 29:07.55).
The Spartans return to action in their final regular-season meet on October 25 at the Valdosta State Invitational. The race is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.
