Spartans Suffer Two Extra Inning Losses
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa and #16 Barry University met in a non-conference doubleheader, with Barry taking a 2-0 victory in game one and a 3-2 win in the second game. Over five hours of softball took place as the first game went nine innings and the second was 10. The Spartans drop to 0-4 on the season as Barry improves to 3-1.
Game one remained a scoreless deadlock until Barry scored both of their runs in the top of the ninth. Tampa pitcher Devlin Dougherty turned in another gem of a performance as she went nine innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits. Dougherty also struck out seven Buccaneers.
The second game rivaled the first in terms of pitching as UT freshman Heather Van Landingham pitched all 10 innings as only one of her three runs were earned. Van Landingham also struck out nine Barry batters while giving up four scattered hits.
Kelly Glover recorded a pair of hits in game one as Michele Horan had two singles in the second game. Horan also drove in one of UT's two runs as the other came on a Dougherty base hit in the bottom of the eighth inning to even the score at 2-2 and send the game to the ninth.
Tampa is back in action on Saturday, Feb., 10, as they host Valdosta State. The doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the University of Tampa Softball Complex.
