Spartans Back on Track Following Sweep of West Florida
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa softball team posted a pair of impressive shutout victories over the University of West Florida, winning game one of Friday night's doubleheader by a score of 3-0 and concluding the nightcap with a 5-0 win. The Spartans improve to 3-5 with the victories while the Argonauts drop to 7-6 on the season.
In game one, a first inning UT run was all starting pitcher Devlin Dougherty needed as she pitched seven scoreless innings while allowing just one hit. Dougherty struck out six Argonauts on the game.
Michele Horan, Brandyce Trowell and Kelly Glover all had a hit apiece as Glover's third inning double drove in two runs to give Dougherty added insurance.
The second game was highlighted by a home run that sailed over the centerfield fence by Tampa's Samantha Becker in the second inning. The three-run home run was part of a five-run second by the Spartans, which marked their biggest inning of the season.
Freshman Heather Van Landingham got the start in the second game and was equally impressive while notching her first career shutout. She allowed just two hits in seven innings while striking out nine batters.
The Spartans look to continue their winning streak as they travel to St. Petersburg tomorrow to play in the Eckerd Tournament. UT will play a pair of games, beginning with a 2 p.m. meeting with Palm Beach Atlantic and concluding with a 4:30 p.m. contest with Florida Gulf Coast.
