Spartans Take Two of Three in Final Day of Florida Southern Tournament

LAKELAND, Fla. - The University of Tampa softball team won its first two games of the day before dropping the finale to the tournament host. The Spartans opened the day with a 4-1 victory over Florida Tech and continued the success in an 11-2 win over West Chester (Pa.) in the second game of the day. The final game was a 5-1 loss to 18th ranked Florida Southern as the Spartans moved to 17-12 on the season.
In game one, it was a tightly contested game where the Spartans struck in the top of the sixth inning with a solo homerun to deep center field by Samantha Becker. Kelly Glover then took a solo blast to the right center field for a two run homerun driving in Devlin Dougherty off an early walk to take a 3-0 lead.
Florida Tech responded leading off with a single by Danielle Stanley, who later scored off a single by Rebecca Cavazos, retiring the inning 3-1.
In the top of the seventh, Tampa capitalized off a Becker fly ball error to right field driving in Katie Davis for a 4-1 lead. Finishing the game with three solid strikeouts, Tampa earned the victory.
In game two, the Golden Rams took an early lead off two singles by Tara Colautuono and Stephanie Brady in the top of the second. Tampa countered with back-to-back singles by Katie Davis and Michele Horan loading the bases with Brandi Blout on third after a walk. Kallan Casey also walked bringing in Blout for the first run of the game. Becker, with the bases loaded, hit a double to deep center field to drive in Horan and Casey and taking a commanding 3-2 lead. The Spartans finished inning with back-to-back singles by Glover and Jessica Tejas driving in Becker to secure the win.
In game three, the Spartans allowed Florida Southern to score one in the first and three in the third. The only offense Tampa could muster was a sixth inning run where Becker drove in Katie Davis for the lone UT run of the game.
The Spartans, who have now won 12 of their last 14 games, are back in action on Tuesday as they travel to St. Petersburg to meet Sunshine State Conference foe Eckerd College. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.
