Dougherty Tosses No Hitter as Tampa Wins Sixth Straight
TAMPA, Fla. - Devlin Dougherty recorded her third career no-hitter and first of 2007 as the University of Tampa softball team registered a 1-0 victory over visiting Nova Southeastern in a Sunshine State Conference meeting. The Spartans, winners of 18 of the last 20 games, are now 23-12 on the season and 8-2 in league play while the Sharks drop to 21-21 and 1-6 in the SSC.
The no-hitter was the first since March 11 of last season, when Dougherty no-hit Salem International in a 10-0 Spartan win. Her other no-hitter came in a 1-0 triumph over Rollins on February 25 of last year. The no-hitter marked the fifth in school history for UT.
Dougherty finished her memorable game with eight strikeouts in seven innings. The senior from Couer d'Alene, Idaho moves to 11-6 on the year as she notched her fourth shutout.
The lone Spartan run came in the second inning when Jessica Tejas reached on a fielding error by the third baseman. Tejas moved herself into scoring position after stealing second, but was lifted for pinch runner Meredith Morris following the stolen base. Morris then scored on a Krystal Crooks double to deep center field on the next play for the only run of the contest.
The same two teams are back in action tomorrow in a 1 p.m. doubleheader from Tampa.
