TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa softball team split a doubleheader on senior day with Florida Tech as the Spartans took game one by a score of 11-5 before dropping the second game 4-1. Tampa is now 28-15 on the season and 13-5 in the Sunshine State Conference as Florida Tech is 39-22 and 15-7 in league play.
The Spartans enjoyed a stellar performance at the plate in game one after five first inning runs spotted UT a 5-2 lead after one. Eight of Tampa's nine hitters had at least one hit in the game with Devlin Dougherty hitting a highlight home run that cleared the center field fence.
A total of six Spartans enjoyed multi-hit performances in game one as Kallan Casey, Samantha Becker, Kelly Glover, Krystal Crooks and Brandi Blout joined Dougherty. Blout led UT with four RBI's in the game.
Freshman Heather Van Landingham got the start and improved her record to 10-7 with the victory. She went all seven innings, allowing seven hits and five runs while striking out two.
In game two, a first inning run followed by three in the second was all Florida Tech needed as UT was limited to only a seventh inning run. Dougherty started and took the loss to fall to 14-8 on the season.
With no more regular season home games on the schedule, Tampa will conclude the regular season with a pair of three game sets with Saint Leo and Rollins that will determine the Spartans postseason fate. Tampa next travels to Saint Leo for a 7 p.m. meeting with the Lions on Friday.
