Spartans Fall to Rollins in NCAA Opener
MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - The 17th-ranked University of Tampa softball team suffered an opening round 4-1 loss to Rollins College in the NCAA II South Regional, which is being played at Barry University. The Spartans drop to 31-12 on the year as the Tars improve to 39-14.
Rollins scored the first run of the game on a Jamie Rausch home run and tacked on another in the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead. Ashley Carrea trimmed the score to 2-1 on a fourth inning home run that cleared the left field fence. A two run homer by the Tars in the seventh put the game out of reach.
The Spartans finished the game with eight hits, though five were infield hits. UT also left 11 runners on base throughout the contest.
Deanna Henriott pitched for UT and is now 21-8 on the year. The freshman struck out five in seven innings of work and now needs just five to match Devlin Dougherty's single-season record.
Tampa will now play on Thursday at 1:30 p.m., against the loser of Wednesday night's Barry and Albany State game.
