UT Wins Final Two Games of Valdosta State Tournament
VALDOSTA, Ga. - A victory over 15th-ranked Valdosta State was among the two victories The University of Tampa softball team recorded on the final day of the VSU Tourney. After opening the day with a 6-3 win over West Florida (6-3), the Spartans competed the day with a 3-2 victory over Valdosta State (11-3). UT is now 6-2 on the year.
Against West Florida, the Spartans scored a run in the first and second innings before breaking the game open with a three-run fourth on a home run by Rachel Browning. Krystal Crooks and Jessica Keefe each collected a pair of hits in the victory.
Heather VanLandingham started for UT and went five innings to get the victory. With a record of 2-1, VanLandingham struck out four on the game. Freshman Deanna Henriott earned her first career save as she pitched the final two innings in relief.
In the game with the nationally-ranked Blazers, Tampa broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the seventh inning on a single by Keefe. The run was one of three RBI's for Keefe as she drove in all of UT's runs in the game.
Henriott got the start and hurled the complete game to improve to 4-1 on the season. In seven innings of work, she registered nine strikeouts while allowing just four hits.
Tampa returns home where it will host Salem International (W.V.) on Tuesday. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m., at the UT Softball Complex.
