Tampa Returns Home to Sweep Salem International in Pair of One-Hitters
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa softball team extended its winning streak to four games with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Salem International (W.V.) University. After winning the first game by a score of 6-1, the Spartans completed the sweep with a 1-0 game two victory. UT is now 8-2 on the year while SIU falls to 0-4.
In game one, The Tigers struck first with a run in the first inning. Down 1-0, the Spartans struck for three runs apiece in the fourth and fifth innings. Samantha Becker collected three hits while Krystal Crooks and Jessica Keefe each had two. Keefe and pinch hitter Ashley Carrea were each credited with RBI's in the game.
Heather VanLandingham started the first game for Tampa, going the distance to improve her record to 3-1 on the season. She allowed just one hit while striking out five Tigers.
Freshman pitcher Deanna Henriott gave up just one hit, which was a single in the first inning. Her fifth complete game and second shutout of the season improves her to 5-1. She also struck out a career high 14 batters while walking none.
The lone scoring Tampa had in the second game was an RBI triple by Jessica Tejas in the second inning, which scored Krystal Crooks. The Spartans finished with four hits, two of which came in the sixth inning.
UT is back in action on Thursday as it hosts #17 Midwestern State (Tex.) in a 4 p.m., doubleheader.
