Nationally Ranked Spartans Bully Tritons
TAMPA, Fla. - For the first time since 2004, the University of Tampa softball team cracked into the NFCA Division II top 25 poll. The Spartans welcomed their #20 ranking with an 8-0 shutout over the Tritons of Eckerd College. The Spartans improve to 16-5 on the season, 3-1 in the Sunshine State Conference action while the Tritons fall to 5-19, 2-2 in conference action.
The reigning Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week, Deanna Henriott, came out strong for the Spartans striking out her first four batters, finishing with eight strikeouts while allowing one hit. Henriott improves her record to 11-3 on the season.
Jessica Tejas secured the victory with a fifth-inning walk off homerun to left field. Tejas was 2-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Ashely Acuri and Michelle Horan went 2-3, while Samantha Becker collected two RBI.
Melissa Flint was the lone Triton to record a hit as she started at pitcher and recorded the loss.
The Spartans are back in action tomorrow as they will look to conclude the Eckerd series with a double header starting at 6 pm.
