Henriott Leads #20 Tampa to Sweep of Bryant
TAMPA, Fla. - Freshman pitcher Deanna Henriott followed up an unhittable game one performance with a nearly impressive game two relief appearance to give the 20th-ranked University of Tampa softball team a sweep of Bryant (R.I.) University. The 20-5 Spartans won by scores of 8-0 and 3-2, dropping the Bulldogs to 0-2 on the year.
In game one, Henriott allowed just one hit while striking out 12 Bulldog batters. She walked none in six innings of work. Jessica Keefe was 3-3 from the plate with a pair of RBI's while freshman Cassie Barnes collected a pair of hits to go with three RBI's.
The Spartans finished the first game in the sixth inning on a walk-off single by pinch hitter Kari Walsh. Brandi Blout scored on the play after starting out the inning with a single.
Bryant struck first in game two, scoring a run in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead. UT chipped away at the lead, scoring its first run on a Blout double in the fifth inning. The Spartans then took the lead on a two-run double by SSC Player of the Week Jessica Tejas in the sixth.
Henriott entered the game in relief of starting pitcher Heather Van Landingham in the fifth inning. She pitched the final 2.2 innings, giving up three hits while striking out four to earn the win. With two wins on the evening, she now stands at 15-3 on the year.
UT returns to action on Tuesday as it hosts Hillsdale (Mich.) College at 6 p.m.
