#20 Tampa Splits Doubleheader With Rollins
TAMPA, Fla. - The 20th-ranked University of Tampa softball team split a double-header with the Tars of Rollins College with a 1-0 victory followed by a 6-2 loss in nine innings. The Spartans are now 29-10, 12-6 in Sunshine State Conference play, while the Tars are 32- 12, 9-6 in conference play.
In game one, Samantha Becker was the highlight performer as she rallied a single late in the seventh inning, driving in Ashley Acuri,and taking a 1-0 final lead. Acuri enjoyed a stellar day as she went 3-3 with a walk and the lone run to help the Spartans to victory.
Deanna Henriott provided a solid pitching performance for the Spartans with 10 strikeouts, allowing three hits and no runs while improving her record to 20-5.
In game two, the Tars got off to an early 1-0 lead inning. Monica Meadows singled and scored the early run off a single by Lauren Starcher. Sherri Rabenold homered inside the park in the top of the fifth to give the Tars a 2-0 lead.
The Spartans got on board with singles from Becker, Jessica Tejas and Jessica Keefe, all in the sixth to tie the game at 2-2.
The Spartans ran into trouble in the ninth inning as the Tars scored four runs to put the game out of reach, highlighted by a triple, double and two single's, all in the inning. The Spartans could not amount to the Tars eigth inning.
The Spartans are back in action on Friday at 7 p.m., as they look to conclude conference play against national number-one and SSC frontrunner Barry University, in Miami Shores, Fla.
