Pitching Duo Leads UT to Sweep of #1 Barry
MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - The University of Tampa softball team finished its regular season with a bang, defeating the nation's top ranked team, Barry University. UT won each game by a score of 2-1 as the Spartans now stand at 31-11 and 14-7 in the Sunshine State Conference. The Buccaneers drop to 40-6 and 17-4 in the SSC.
In game one, Ashley Arcuri drove in both runs in the second inning to lead the Spartans to victory. That was all the support Heather VanLandingham needed as she pitched the complete game. VanLandingham is now 10-4 on the season after allowing just four hits and striking out six.
In the second game, UT got going right away as it scored a run in the first and another in the third. After allowing a Barry run in the bottom of the second, Deanna Henriott held the Buccaneers scoreless for the final five innings.
Arcuri led the Spartans at the plate in the second game as she had three hits while scoring both runs. Michele Horan and Samantha Becker each added a pair of hits as the top three hitters in the UT lineup combines to go 7-12 from the plate. Becker and Krystal Crooks drove in the Tampa runs.
Henriott improves to 21-7 on the year after pitching the complete game. The freshman from St. Petersburg allowed just three hits while striking out two.
UT now awaits word on the NCAA South Regional as it hopes to earn an at-large selection. The regional is scheduled for May 7-11 at a site to be announced.
