No. 11 Spartans Sweep Saturday Doubleheader
WINTER PARK, Fla. - The No. 11 University of Tampa (18-6, 6-3 SSC) softball team swept a pair of games against No. 6 Rollins College (29-4, 6-3 SSC) in a doubleheader at Lake Island Park on Saturday.
Junior Kayla Cox started game one and earned her 13th victory of the season. She tossed a complete 7.0 innings with seven strikeouts and allowing no runs on three hits. Her record improves to 13-3 on the year.
The Spartans took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Kayleen Boatwright started the game with a base hit and would eventually come around to score on an illegal pitch by the Tars starter Stephanie Sullivan.
Stacy Piagno extended the lead for Tampa in the top of the third on a bases clearing RBI double. Brie Walton, Boatwright, and Katie Bannon all came around to score and give the Spartans a 4-0 advantage.
Tampa added another run in the sixth to take a 5-0 lead, which would be the eventual final score.
Julia Morrow started the second game where she went 5.0 innings with nine strikeouts and allowing one run on four hits. She earned her fifth victory of the year and now holds an overall record of 5-3. Kayla Cox pitched the final 2.0 innings and allowed just one hit to earn her second save of the season.
Taylor Storey belted a homerun to left in the top of the second to give the Spartans an early 1-0 lead.
Piagno delivered a clutch two out RBI base hit in the sixth. Boatwright came around to score and give Tampa a 2-0 advantage.
The Tars got a run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to 2-1. Pinch runner Meghan Durbin scored the lone run of the game for Rollins on an RBI double by Turner.
UT will return to action Saturday evening at home for the first of a three game set against Barry. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. Live stats will be available through www.tampaspartans.com.
