Tampa Rallies in Victory Over Barry
TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 7 University of Tampa (19-8, 7-5 SSC) softball team defeated Barry University (21-11, 9-3 SSC) at Naimoli Family Field on Sunday by a score of 4-3.
Kayla Cox started for the Spartans and earned her 14th victory of the season. She tossed a complete 7.0 innings with five strikeouts and allowing three runs on six hits. Her record improves to 14-4 on the year.
Barry jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Alexis Kent delivered an RBI base hit that scored Britney Pugh.
Tampa responded in the bottom of the third on an RBI base hit by Kayleen Boatwright. Pinch runner Meagan Brislin came around to score and tie the game at 1-1.
The Buccaneers reclaimed the lead in the top of the fourth. Pugh walked to lead off the inning. Kate Hehre pinch ran and came around to score on an RBI double by Kelly Martinez. A sacrifice bunt by Kent allowed Martinez to cross the plate and give Barry a 3-1 advantage.
The Spartans rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. Stacy Piagno delivered a clutch bases loaded two RBI single that scored Katie Bannon and Boatwright. Meagan Burke advanced to third on the base hit and scored on a throwing error by Barry.
Tampa maintained the lead to capture the win.
UT will return to action Thursday evening at home for the first of a three game set against Florida Southern. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. Live stats will be available through www.tampaspartans.com.
