Kayla Cox Hurls Another Historic Performance
TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 12 University of Tampa (29-8, 17-5 SSC) softball team defeated Lynn University (19-29, 5-17 SSC) at Lynn Softball Field on Friday.
Kayla Cox started for the Spartans and earned her 22nd victory of the season. She tossed 7.0 complete innings with 12 strikeouts while allowing no runs on no hits. Cox recorded her seventh no-hitter of the season and improves her record to 22-4.
Tampa took an early lead in the top of the first on a wild pitch by Lynn starter Kasey Murray. Meagan Burke came around to score and give the Spartans a 1-0 advantage.
The Spartans quickly responded with two runs in the second. Burke delivered an RBI single that scored Brittany Garcia. Stacy Piagno followed with an RBI base hit to plate Kayleen Boatwright and give Tampa a 3-0 lead.
Two fielding errors in the top of the sixth by Lynn allowed Tampa to extend the lead. Katie Bannon and Boatwright each scored in the inning. The Spartans would hold off the Fighting Knights for the 5-0 victory.
UT will return to action Saturday against Lynn for a doubleheader to conclude the three game series and wrap up the regular season. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 12 p.m. Live stats will be available through www.tampaspartans.com.
