No. 10 Tampa Takes Pair of Games in Clermont
CLERMONT, Fla. - The No. 10 University of Tampa (24-4) softball team extended its winning streak to seven games with a pair of wins at Hancock Park. UT topped the University of Northwestern Ohio (8-6) and Concordia University, Mich. (14-8) by scores of 5-1 and 1-0.
Tampa struck fast against Northwestern Ohio as Kayleen Boatwright led off with a walk and scored on a Bre Setree RBI. Lindsay Dring would then drive home the second run of the inning, scoring Meagan Burke.
Boatwright would single home Jenna Halper in the second, giving the Spartans a 3-0 lead. A two-run single by Setree in the fifth inning would score Kandi Kuder and Boatwright, extending the Spartan lead 5-0.
Kayla Cox (11-3) would strike out the first eight Racer hitters and finish with 16 on the day. Boatwright led the Spartans at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a walk, run and RBI. Setree drove in three runs as Dring also finished with a pair of hits against UNOH.
The Concordia game was a pitchers' duel between UT's Julia Morrow and CU's Kortney Loar. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth, when Kandi Kuder led off with a single up the middle. Burke then drove in the game's first run on a double to right center.
Morrow (13-1) pitched her fifth shutout of the season, throwing 7.0 scoreless innings. She allowed just two hits while striking out 10 Warriors.
The Spartans now return home for a three-game set against Sunshine State Conference opponent Eckerd College, beginning Friday at 6 p.m., at the Naimoli Family Softball Field.
