Pair of Spartans Named All-Americans
TAMPA, Fla.- The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and Daktronics announced their 2014 All-America teams on Thursday. Tampa's Kayla Cox was named first-team Daktronics All-America and second-team NFCA All-America. Teammate Julia Morrow also earned All-America honors, as she was named to the Daktronics third-team.
Cox, a senior from Riverview, Fla., earned her second appearance on the NFCA All-America team as she was on the first team last season. This is also Cox's third appearance on the Daktronics All-America team, as she earned Daktronics National Pitcher of the Year last season and earned first-team honors in her sophomore season. This season, Cox started 25 games in the circle and compiled an 18-3 record, 0.84 ERA, and 210 strikeouts in 159 innings pitched. She also threw nine shutouts and 16 complete games.
Morrow, a junior from Baiting Hollow, N.Y., earned her first All-America honor. Morrow finished her junior campaign as the national leader in ERA at 0.72. This season, Morrow went 15-5 with three saves. She compiled 195 strikeouts in 126.1 innings pitched while only allowing 51 hits and 13 earned runs. She also threw six shutouts and 16 complete games.
The NFCA Division II All-America team is voted on by the coaches in NCAA Division II softball. The Daktronics All-America team is voted on by the Sport Information Directors in NCAA Division II.
