Spartans Sweep Saturday Doubleheader in Shutout Style
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa (20-9,
8-6 SSC) softball team swept a pair of games over Florida Southern
College (14-22, 1-10 SSC) at Naimoli Family Field on Saturday
afternoon.
Julia Morrow started both games for the Spartans and earned her
16th and 17th victories of the season. She tossed 14.0 shutout
innings with 23 strikeouts while allowing five hits. The senior
tossed a one-hitter in game one keeping the Mocs off the scoreboard
in both games of the doubleheader.
In game one Tampa took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third on an
RBI single by Bre Setree that plated Sahrina Cortes.
Setree struck again in the bottom of the fifth delivering an RBI
double to score Cortes for a 2-0 advantage, which would be all UT
needed to claim the win behind the stellar pitching of Morrow.
Game two was a pitcher's duel until Tampa rallied for two runs in
the bottom of the fifth to take the lead. Cortes notched an RBI
single while Setree was credited with a bases loaded sacrifice fly
giving the Spartans a 2-0 advantage.
UT added two insurance runs in the sixth as Taylor Collins
delivered an RBI single followed by an RBI double off the bat of
Cortes. Morrow and the Spartans held on for the final three outs in
the seventh to sweep the doubleheader over the Mocs.
Kandi Kuder also contributed to the Spartan offense with three hits
on the afternoon.
