
Spartans Look to Build on Recent Success
After winning four of the last five, Tampa will host Embry-Riddle for three game matchup
TAMPA, Fla - The University of Tampa Softball team will host the Embry-Riddle Eagles for a three game series that begins on Friday at 6 p.m. and wraps up with an afternoon doubleheader on Saturday. The Spartans are coming off a 2-1 series win against the Nova Southeastern University Sharks last weekend and a midweek doubleheader sweep of the Ferris State University Bulldogs. Tampa currently has a 9-7 overall record and 4-5 in SSC play.
For the Spartans, sophomore Sahrina Cortes leads the offense with a .429 batting average, scoring 12 runs to go with two RBI and also hitting two triples on the season. Junior Bre Setree is third on the team with a .367 average and she has a team high 11 RBI as well as 18 hits in 16 games and the teams only home run so far. The pitching duo of Makaleigh Dooley and Alyssa Bache have also contributed on offense as they have eight and 11 RBI respectively, with Bache tied for the team lead in that category. Bache is coming off two wins against FSU as she recorded 14 strikeouts, no walks and gave up only two runs on six hits in the two games against the Bulldogs.
Embry-Riddle is coming off a busy week as they hosted the Florida Southern College Mocs for a three game series that the Eagles swept and midweek doubleheaders against American International College and Fisher College that they also swept. The Eagles overall record is 19-6.
Opposite UT, ERAU is led offensively by freshman Kassidy Simmons, who is batting .453 after 25 games played. In those games, Simmons has scored 21 runs and has 27 RBI. Simmons also leads the team in pitching as she has thrown seven complete games for a total of 63 innings. In those appearances, Simmons has given up 15 runs for a 1.33 ERA while holding a record of 8-1.
Overall, Tampa holds a 2-0 record against Embry-Riddle, winning both of the previous games in 2014 by final scores of 3-1 and 4-0.
