UT Falls to Barry University in Series Finale
The offense was kept quiet for a second consecutive game in 5-1 loss
Miami Shores, Fla – The University of Tampa wrapped up their regular season series against the Barry University Buccaneers on Saturday morning in game three of their series. Unfortunately, UT fell to Barry by a 5-1 final score.
With one more conference series in the books, Tampa now stands at 12-10 on the season but falls to 5-7 in Sunshine State Conference play. The Buccaneers in the meantime move to 14-10 overall and 8-4 in SSC play.
Making her second start in the series, senior Alyssa Bache (7-5) was the pitcher of choice. The senior pitched another complete game, giving up five runs with only two of those runs being earned. Bache spread out nine hits during the game to go with two walks but added six more strikeouts to bring her season total to an even 100.
Starting for Barry opposite Tampa was Geneva Santos (9-5). The sophomore shut down the Spartan offense in her four innings of work as she only gave up four hits, walked three, and only got one strikeout on the day. Santos was also tagged with the lone UT run that came in the 5th inning. Freshman Anieliese Palmeiro took to the pitchers circle in the 5th inning and finished the final three innings to earn her second save of the season.
It was a difficult morning at the plate for the Spartans as they could not do much on offense. Despite being able to get seven hits off the two Barry pitchers, they were all singles. This led to leaving 10 batters on base through the game including back to back innings to start the game of not being able to bring in any runs despite having runners on first and second. The run the Tampa offense managed in the 5th came off a RBI single by Bache to left-center field that brought home center fielder Sahrina Cortes who had opened the inning with a walk and advanced to second after freshman Cristina Clauberg drew another walk. The offense stuttered and could not cash in on a bases loaded situation that could have made the game closer.
The team will look to bounce back on Tuesday March 22 as they take on NYIT in a midweek doubleheader at the US National Training Complex in Clermont, Fla. First pitch in the series is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
