Spartans Fall Short in Sunday Finale Against Mocs
Despite tallying 6 hits, UT fell to FSC 3-1 in game three of the series
LAKELAND, Fla – On Sunday afternoon The University of Tampa softball team wrapped up their regular season series with the Florida Southern College Moccasins in a single game that was scheduled after Friday's opener was postponed due to rain making the field unplayable.
The Mocs took game three in the series by a 3-1 final score after the Spartans had swept the doubleheader on Saturday 3-0 in each game.
With the series complete, UT stands at 17-19 on the season and is 9-12 in Sunshine State Conference play. In the meantime, FSC moves to 15-27-1 overall and 7-13-1 in SSC play.
In the circle for Tampa to start the game was freshman Makaleigh Dooley (6-9). Dooley could only go three innings as she allowed two runs to score on two hits, though neither run was earned as the team had two errors that let the runners reach base. Dooley finished the day with two strikeouts and no walks. Senior Alyssa Bache (11-9) came on in relief in the bottom of the 4th inning and pitched the rest of the game as she gave up just one more run on three hits. Bache also had two walks and three strikeouts in the game as she now has 155 strikeouts this season.
Starting opposite Dooley and tossing the complete game was Brandi Jones (8-13) for the Mocs. Jones gave up just the one run as she had two strikeouts and no walks to take home the win.
On offense, UT was able to tally six hits off Jones but was only able to score one run in the top of the 4th inning. The run for the Spartans came off a ground rule double to left field by shortstop Alyssa Colletti that scored Lauren Pascoe from second. Pascoe was pinch running for third baseman Bre Setree who had reached first on a fielder's choice and moved to second on a single through the left side by Bache. Despite having the go ahead run on third, Tampa was not able to keep the offense going after that.
The Spartans will be back in action on Friday April 29 and Saturday April 30 as they host Rollins College for the final series of the season. The game on Friday is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and the series will conclude on Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
