
Tars Take Saturday Doubleheader Over Spartans
The Spartans had their chances but fell short in both games
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa softball team and Rollins College wrapped up the three-game series with a Saturday afternoon doubleheader. The visiting side took the first game of the day 2-0 while the second game went 11 innings with the Tars escaping with the 3-2 victory. Tampa will now turn their attention to Wheeling Jesuit who comes to town midweek for a doubleheader.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP (GAME ONE):

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Tars scored one run in the top of the 4th inning and added an insurance run in the top of the 7th inning to win the game.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Kaye went seven innings allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits, no walks, and throwing a career-high seven strikeouts.
- Maddie Farrell went 2 for 2 at the plate.
- The two teams combined to strand 11 runners on the bases.
- Sahrina Cortes was hit by a pitch on two occasions.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- A walk drawn by Bailey Phillips in the bottom of the sixth inning extended the Spartans streak with at least one walk to eight games.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Rollins tallied two runs in the top of the third inning for the only runs in the game.
Bott 6th: A single by Phillips to open the inning drew a pitching change from the Tars. Mackenzie Allen replaced Phillips as a pinch runner. With one out on the board, Shelby Press stepped up to the plate and sent a shot to right field that made its way over the right fielders head and outstretched hand. Press showed off her speed as she nearly caught up to Allen on her way to going all the way around the bases for an inside-the-park-homerun to tie the game up at 2-2.
The Tars scored one time in the top of the 11th inning to mark the difference.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Dooley threw 140 pitches across the eleven innings of work with 108 being strikes.
- Press finished the game going 2 for 5 at the plate with a run and 2 RBI.
- The two teams combined for 20 runners left on base.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- The Spartans extended their streak of games with at least one walk to nine.
- The home run by Press is the first of the season for Tampa.
UP NEXT:
The team will host Wheeling Jesuit this coming Wednesday for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
