No Fly Zone as Spartans Shutout Griffins in Doubleheader
Tampa took game one in ten innings and won game two in seven innings
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa softball team hosted the Chestnut Hill Griffins for a midweek doubleheader on Wednesday night. The first game went the distance scoreless as neither side was able to break through in the seven innings of regulation and it took until the 10th inning for the difference maker as Tampa walked off with a 1-0 win. The second game only took seven innings as Tampa came away with a 2-0 win.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP (Game One):

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Bott. 10th: Emalee Jansen hit a single to third base and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Erica Matich. Sahrina Cortes doubled to left-center field and after a brief moment of hesitation to make sure the ball was not caught, Jansen took off and came around to score to end the game.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Sam Kaye started the game and went a strong six innings before exiting in the top of the 7th inning with the score tied 0-0 and getting no decision.
- Cortes finished the day going 3 for 5 at the plate.
- Kaye and Dooley combined for ten strikeouts and two walks.
- Both sides combined to leave 16 runners on base.
- Despite giving up no runs, neither starting pitcher was tagged with a decision as they both left with the game scoreless.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- The Spartans are now 2-3 in extra-inning games this season.
- Tampa has hit at least one extra-base hit in eight straight games.
- The home side has drawn 40 walks this year.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Bott. 2nd: Taylor Farrell drew a two-out walk and moved to second on a single to third base by Lauren Pascoe. Alex Walton singled up the middle and T.Farrell was waved home by Coach Kanter and the throw home was cut off allowing her to score safely.
Bott. 3rd: Emily Proffitt started the inning with a single to right field and advanced to second on a fielding error by the Griffins shortstop as Dooley reached first base. Bailey Phillips drew a walk to load the bases with nobody out and drawing a pitching change from the visitors. Jansen hit a one-out sacrifice fly to left field that doubled the Spartan lead at 2-0.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Pascoe finished the game going 3 for 3 at the plate.
- Dooley threw 86 pitches with 69 strikes.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- The UT streak with at least one extra-base hit was snapped at eight games.
- Tampa has at least seven hits in ten straight games.
- The Spartans have at least one walk in five straight games.
UP NEXT:
The team will host Lynn University this weekend for a crucial three-game Sunshine State Conference series. Game one in the series is slated for Friday at 6 p.m.
