TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa softball team hosts the Eckerd College Tritons for the last series of the regular season. The two teams will open the series on Friday night before closing the season with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader. In between the games on Saturday, the seniors on both teams will be recognized.
The Matchup: Tampa vs. Eckerd
Date/Time: Friday, April 27th at 6 p.m. and Saturday, April 28th at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Location: Naimoli Family Softball Field | Tampa, Fla.
About the Spartans: Tampa will look to continue their strong play after winning four of their last six against No.4 Palm Beach Atlantic and No.19 Saint Leo. At the plate, UT is led by senior Sahrina Cortes who comes into the series with a .324 AVG and also leads the team in hits (44), runs (15), and stolen bases (4) and is second in doubles (10). Bailey Phillips and Shelby Press round out the top three offensively as they are batting .316 and .306 respectively. Junior ace Makaleigh Dooley leads the Spartans in the circle as she has carried the load this season racking up 232.1 innings of work and has a 1.30 ERA. Dooley has given up 43 earned runs and 20 walks and has set a career high in strikeouts with 217.
About the Tritons: Junior Nikole Van Gennep has played a significant role for the Tritons this season as she not only leads the team at the plate with a .354 AVG but she has been the pitcher of choice for most of the season in the circle as she leads the team with 169 innings tossed. Van Gennep comes in with a 14-11 record in 31 appearances (25 starts) and has a 2.44 ERA. The junior has 18 complete games and has given up 59 earned runs and has 99 strikeouts to 26 walks. Van Gennep leads Eckerd offensively in runs (26), hits (51), and doubles (11). Kaleigh Floyd (.354 avg) and Crystal Garcia (.336 avg) round out the top three offensively for Eckerd.
Series History: Tampa leads the all-time series 89-22 over Eckerd. UT has won seven of the last ten games in the series.
