
Spartans Shutout Eckerd in Series Opener
The University of Tampa softball team earned their third shutout in the last four games.
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa softball team continued their home stand with their fifth win in the last six games. Corynn Miner logged her third straight complete game shutout, against an Eckerd offense which averaged over four runs per game entering the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
BOT 1ST | To lead off the game for UT, Stephanie Balmer roped a single into center field. Balmer advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Cristina Clauberg and moved to third on a passed ball. With two outs, Mariah Galhouse lasered an RBI triple down the left field line. The freshman sensation, Galhouse, ranks second on the team with 16 hits and five RBI. || UT 1, EC 0
BOT 6TH | With one out, Galhouse reached on a free-pass and advanced into socring position as the freshman recorded the first stolen base of her career. Maddie Farrell gave the Spartans an insurance run with a drive to left field, which the left-fielder Kayelee Newstrom dropped, and the error allowed Galhouse to score from second. || UT 2, EC 0
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Corynn Miner tossed her third straight complete game shutout and earned her eighth win of the year. The red-shirt junior allowed three hits and struck out five batters in her 12th appearance of the season. Miner ranks second in the SSC with a 0.56 ERA over 75.1 innings pitched.
- Mariah Galhouse logged her fifth RBI of the season to give UT a first-inning lead.
- Stephanie Balmer's recorded at least one hit in seven of the last nine games.
- Eckerd's leader in hits, Hannah Famiano, was held hitless for the second time all season.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- In the first inning, Galhouse registered her first career triple.
- Emily Proffitt's tied for the fifth-most hits on the team with 10 base knocks in only 30 at-bats.
- The Spartans scored a first inning run for the eighth time this year. Tampa's undefeated in all eight games in which they've scored a first inning run.
- UT has won nine of the last 11 games, including two conference series victories over Palm Beach Atlantic and No. 16 Saint Leo.
- Miner held Eckerd without a hit for the first three innings.
UP NEXT: Tampa will continue the weekend series against Eckerd College with a doubleheader scheduled for 1:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
