Tampa Finishes Undefeated at the Panther Invitational

TAMPA, Fla. – The No. 17 University of Tampa softball team beats Wingate and wins all three games at the Panther Invitational.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

Final: #17 Tampa 9, Wingate 0 (5 innings)

Records:  Tampa Spartans 5-0, Wingate Bulldogs 3-2

All-time Series: Tampa extends their undefeated record over Wingate to 3-0

HOW IT HAPPENED — GAME ONE:

• After the first 2 innings were scoreless, Stephanie Balmer tried to get something started for Tampa with a leadoff double; however, the Spartans would leave two stranded runners and couldn't get the timely hit they needed. Mid 3 | 0-0 Tie
• Camryn Wineinger led off the fourth with a walk and Mariah Galhouse played some small ball, resulting in a bunt single. After a wild pitch, the Spartans had 2 runners in scoring position with nobody out. Lexie Chevalier had an RBI single to bring home Wineinger; however, Galhouse was thrown out at 3^rd on the play. Top 4 | 1-0 Tampa
• The Spartans broke out in the 5^th inning with RBI singles from Wineinger and Galhouse, then Chevalier brought in those two with a 3-run homerun to extend Tampa's lead to 6. Lilly Kiester followed the scoring with a 2-run triple and then came into score on an error. Top 5 | 9-0 Tampa

INSIDE THE STATS — GAME ONE:

• Freshman Gwen McGinnis proved herself in the circle today. She went all 5.0 innings, striking out 3 while allowing just 1 hit and no walks.
• Tampa had 4 walks compared to the Bulldogs 1.
• The Spartans had 10 hits and 7 left on base.
• Wineinger, Galhouse, Chevalier, and Balmer all had 2 hit games.

BEYOND THE BOX:

• Chevalier had 4 RBIs and Kiester had 2.
• McGinnis threw 60 strikes on 79 pitches.

UP NEXT: Tampa will be off for almost 2 weeks until they host their first SSC series of the year against Palm Beach Atlantic. Game 1 will be Friday, Feb. 24, at 6:00 PM.
