No. 4 Spartans Sweep Sailfish; Remain Undefeated

TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 4 University of Tampa's softball team concluded their weekend series against Palm Beach Atlantic with a doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

All-time Series: The Spartans are now 25-17 with a seven-game winning streak in head-to-head matchups against the Sailfish.

HOW IT HAPPENED — GAME ONE:

Bottom 1st

The Spartans' offense pounced early the Sailfish's defense. Sailfish pitcher, Lacy Marty walked Lauren Fantone to start off the game. Alexa Russo singled up the middle to score in Fantone to put the Spartans  up early. Having already given up a walk and a run, Marty went against Camryn Wineinger who ripped an RBI base-hit to shallow left field, scoring in Russo to put the Spartans up two. Then Mariah Galhouse contributed a sac-fly which would reel in Wineinger. | 3-0 (Tampa)

Top 2nd

The very next at-bat, PBA retaliated with Bella O'Connor hitting an RBI-Triple down the right-field line, Mackenzie Allen dove in attempt to catch the ball but missed by a millisecond. Scoring was her teammate, Elisa Grande to shorten to the defecit to two. | 3-1 (Tampa)

Bottom 6th

After numerous shutout innnings from the Spartans defense, their last at-bat was not taken for granted. After a flyout to center field for Wineinger advances Russo to second base. From there, Galhouse would step up to the plate and rip a base hit right the third base and shortstop base gap to score in Russo. | 4-1 (Tampa)

HOW IT HAPPENED — GAME TWO:

Bottom 1st

With runners in scoring positions, Wineinger hits an RBI-single to shallow left-center to score in Fantone. The Spartans however left two runners on base to conclude the inning. | 1-0 (Tampa)

Bottom 2nd

With bases loaded, Fantone grounds it right to Sailfish pitcher, Karen Vasquez who then throws the ball home to try to get the force out, but could not exexcute the throw to give up two runs. Later in the lineup, Russo hit an RBI sac-fly to right field to score in Stephanie Balmer. Spartans kept the momentum going with an RBI-single from Wineinger, scoring in Fantone. With Vazsquez already struggling in the circle, she overthrows a pitch, which allowed Lilly Kiester to score. | 6-0 (Tampa)

Bottom 4th

Freshman, Kylie Siwek ripped a base-hit into right field to score in Wineinger to put the Spartans up seven. | 7-0 (Tampa) 

Bottom 5th

With two runners on base, Russo hit an RBI double into left-center which scored in Ashley Mantei for the final play of the game. | 8-0 (Tampa)
