No. 3 Spartans Sweep Bloomsburg

TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 3 University of Tampa's softball team scratched out a close victory over visiting Bloomsburg University before erupting for a 5-inning shutout win to close the twin-bill.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

Game One Final: No. 3 Tampa 2, Bloomsburg 1

Game Two Final: No. 3 Tampa 10, Bloomsburg 0

Records: No. 3 University of Tampa Spartans (18-1), Bloomsburg University Huskies (4-8)

Location: Naimoli Family Softball Field | Tampa, Fla.

All-time Series: The Spartans are now 3-2 in the all-time series with Bloomsburg, as the teams met for the first time since 2011.

HOW IT HAPPENED — GAME ONE:

Top 4th

The Huskies scored the first run of the day on an RBI single. | 1-0 BU

Bottom 5th

A two-out rally was all the Spartans needed, as RBI singles from both Lauren Fantone and Alexa Russo gave Tampa the lead. Fantone would come around and score the go-ahead run as pinch-runner Abigail Siegel crossed as the first UT run. | 2-1 UT

 

INSIDE THE STATS — GAME ONE:

  • Fantone was 2-3 and accounted for both UT runs, driving in one and scoring another.

  • Kate DeSimone was 2-3.

  • Russo had the other RBI on her single.

  • Mary Beth Feldman started for the Spartans, and had a no-decision in 3.0 innings.

  • Gwen McGinnis tossed a scoreless 4.0 frames, allowing just three hits and striking out three to improve to 3-0 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED — GAME TWO:

Bottom 1st

The Spartans had a big first inning, scoring five runs. A bases-loaded walk by Camryn Wineinger allowed Lauren Fantone to score the first run for UT. Mariah Galhouse scored Kiester on a sacrifice fly, followed by Alexa Russo crossing on an error and Weineinger advancing on a wild pitch. Freshman Gabby Mack would drive in the fifth run of the inning on a triple that scored Lexie Chevalier. | 5-0 UT

Bottom 3rd

Another crooked number went up for Tampa in a four-run third. After a Chevalier RBI, Mack continued her impressive game with an RBI single. A Devin Hammonds RBI single scored another while Fantone had the other run batted in. | 9-0 UT

Bottom 4th

Carolyn Watson had a sacrifice fly to score Siegel. | 10-0 UT 

INSIDE THE STATS — GAME TWO:

  • Mack was a perfect 2-2 with a pair of RBI while scoring a run.
  • Fantone, Wineinger and Chevalier each reached base twice.
  • Mariah Galhouse threw 3.0 scoreless to win for the Spartans. She is now 7-1 on the season following her five-strikeout effort.
  • Kate DeSimone pitched 2.0 scoreless innings to finish the game.

BEYOND THE BOX: 

  • Tampa is now a perfect 11-0 at home this season.
  • The Spartan offense continues to impress, scoring 150 runs in 19 games in 2023.
  • UT is hitting .385 this season.

UP NEXT: Tampa hosts Florida Southern for a three-game series, beginning Friday at 6 p.m. The series will conclude with a Saturday doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m.
