Tampa Spartans Outrun The Assumption Greyhounds

TAMPA, Fla. - No. 4 Tampa Spartans defeat the Assumption Greyhounds for a two game sweep.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE:

  • The game started off as a defensive battle, with both teams unable to score through the first four innings. However, in the fifth inning, Assumption managed to put three runs on the board thanks to a clutch double by Heather Junjulas.
  • Tampa responded in the sixth inning with a dominant offensive display, scoring a total of nine runs in the inning. Lauren Fantone, Megan deVilliers, Camryn Wineinger, Lexie Chevalier, Alexa Russo, and Stephanie Balmer all contributed with RBIs in the inning.
  • Gwen McGinnis started for Tampa and put in a solid performance, allowing three runs over 4.2 innings. Mariah Galhouse came in for relief and earned the win, pitching 2.1 scoreless innings.
  • Assumption's pitching struggled in the sixth inning, allowing Tampa to break the game open. Paige Cote started for Assumption, pitching four scoreless innings before the team's bullpen gave up the runs in the sixth.

INSIDE THE STATS:

  • Galhouse earned the win striking out three batters. She threw 30 strikes from 44 pitches in 2.1 innings.
  • Balmer 1-2 at-bat with two RBIs
  • Russo 3-4 at-bat with one RBI 

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO:

  • The game saw Tampa taking an early lead in the first inning with Lexie Chevalier driving in two runs.
  • Tampa continued to add to their lead in the sixth inning with Stephanie Balmer and Camryn Wineinger contributing RBI hits.
  • Tampa's Mary Beth Feldman earned the win, pitching 6.2 innings and allowing only 2 runs. Kate DeSimone came in for the save, closing out the game in the final inning.
  • Assumption made a late push in the seventh inning, scoring two runs off hits from Alyssa Johnson and Emma Bloom. However, it was not enough to overcome Tampa's lead.
