Tampa Softball Set For DII Softball Championship Tournament Opener
Chattanooga, Tenn. - The University of Tampa's Softball program will begin the Division II College Softball Championship Tournament at Frost Stadium at Warner Park in Tennessee this afternoon. This is the Spartans first appearance at the DII Softball Finals and will open the tournament at 4:00pm against the No. 7 seeded Shippensburg University. The Spartans touched down in Chattanooga earlier this week and practiced on the championship field yesterday to prepare for a title run.
The Spartans have earned the right to compete for a national championship by capping off a 40-8 regular season with a NCAA South Super Regional title in dramatic fashion last week. With a pitching staff that leads the nation in ERA (1.13) and strong leadership from an experienced seniors class, the Spartans are looking to make noise in their first trip to the DII Softball Championship Tournament.
PATH TO NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP:
The Division II College Softball Championship Finale starts by reseeding the eight super regional winners and splitting the teams into two pods. The two pods will compete in a double elimination style bracket (exact format as opening regional round) with both pod winners meeting in a best-of-three championship series. The Spartans were named the No. 2 overall seed and will be in "Bracket 2" with No. 3 Central Oklahoma University, No. 6 Pace University, and first round opponent Shippensburg. Should Tampa advance out of thier pod, they will play either No. 1 UT Tyler, No. 4 North Gerogia, No. 5 Saginaw Valley State, or No. 8 Western Washinton out of "Bracket 1" in the chamionship series.
