Eight Game Spartan Winning Streak Ends at Lynn
BOCA RATON, Fla. - The University of Tampa women's basketball team had their eight game winning streak snapped with a 74-62 loss to Lynn University. The Spartans drop to 18-7 overall and 10-4 in Sunshine State Conference play. The Fighting Knights move to 15-10 and 7-7 in league play.
After trailing by as many as 11 points in the first half, the Spartans mounted a rally after trailing 22-11 with 10:07 remaining in the half. An 11-3 run over the next four minutes brought UT within one before the Spartans battled to take their first lead with a 29-28 advantage at the 3:03 mark.
Tampa then headed to the half with a 34-32 lead on a Kym Taylor layup with 28 seconds remaining until halftime.
Following a Lynn basket on the first possession of the second half, UT regained the lead and stretched the advantage to a five point margin at 44-39 with 15:38 remaining in regulation.
The game was back and forth until just under the five minute mark when the Fighting Knights pulled away. With the score 61-58 in favor of Lynn with 4:38 remaining to play, the Knights then proceeded to outscore the Spartans 13-4 to end the game.
Sheena Walton led the Spartans with 15 points and seven rebounds as she also extended her consecutive games with a block to 25 with one blocked shot in the game.
Alexa Kane added 10 points and a team high six assists while Brittany Ridley came off the bench to score 11 points with three assists and a steal.
The Spartans, who shot 36.7 percent from the field, were just 4-18 from three-point range as their opponent connected on 7-11 long-range shots. UT also lost the turnover battle, committing 21 while forcing just 14 Lynn turnovers.
UT returns home to play their final two regular season games at the Bob Martinez Sports Center, beginning with a Wednesday night showdown with Eckerd. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
