Sheena Walton Named South Region Player of the Year
MAGNOLIA, Ark. - University of Tampa women's basketball player Sheena Walton became the first Spartan to earn South Region Player of the Year recognition as Daktronics announced its 2007-08 first and second teams.
Also a Daktronics first-team all-South Region selection, Walton is this season's South Region Player of the Year by virtue of receiving the highest point total among voting. This year's team features two returnees from the 2006-07 squad in Walton and Delta State senior guard Jennifer Rushing. Rushing was a first team selection last year and repeats that honor this season.
Joining Walton and Rushing on the first team are sophomore center Stephanie Sarosi (Nova Southeastern), junior forward Amanda Grappe (Arkansas Tech), and freshman guard Chelsea Johnson (Florida Southern).
The second team features senior forward Krishna Baker (Arkansas Tech), sophomore guard Takesha Riggs (Fort Valley State), junior center Olivia Nagle (Eckerd), senior center Lakira Boyd (Delta State), and senior guard Jennifer Musgrove (Rollins).
Voting was conducted among the sports information directors in the South Region.
All five members of each first team of the eight regions across the country advance to the national ballot for consideration on the 2007-08 Daktronics Women's Basketball All-America Team. All NCAA Division II sports information directors select that team. The student-athlete receiving the most votes will be the National Player of the Year. The All-America team will be announced March 25.
