Spartans Top the Fighting Knights
TAMPA, Fla.- The University of Tampa women's basketball team (9-10, 2-7 SSC) defeated Lynn University (10-9, 5-4 SSC) 58-47 in a Sunshine State Conference match-up on Saturday evening at the Bob Martinez Athletics Center.
After the Fighting Knights scored its first basket, the Spartans went on an 8-0 run. A surge of 3-points baskets enabled the Spartans to maintain a double figure lead.
Senior Jaleesa Harmon led her squad with 10 points to end the first half, while teammates Moriah Hodge and Sarah Wickham entered the locker-room with 6 points apiece. Hodge recorded five blocks in the first half.
The Fighting Knights were held to 16 percent shooting from the field. At the half. Charla Nelson-James led her team with four rebounds, while four players entered the locker-room with two points apiece.
The Spartans shot 50 percent from 3-point range in the second half. Illyssa Vivo led all scorers with 24 points, while Harmon registered 17 points for the game. Kamari Smith grabbed a game high of 12 rebounds.
The Fighting Knights managed to record 24 points in the paint and run away with six fast break points to end the game. Marquis Lee (11 points and 10 rebounds) and Charla Nelson-James (11 points and 11 rebounds) both recorded a double double on the night.
The Spartans will travel to Winter Park, Fla. to play Rollins College this Wednesday in a 5:30 p.m. contest.
