Buccaneers Overthrow Spartans in SSC Play
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa (9-12, 2-9 SSC) women's basketball team fell 60-46 to Barry University (14-6, 8-2 SSC) in a Sunshine State Conference battle Saturday afternoon at the Bob Martinez Athletics Center.
The first half featured three ties and only two lead changes. The Spartans were held to 33 percent shooting from the field.
Sophomore Illyssa Vivo led her team with eight points to end the first half, while Moriah Hodge grabbed five rebounds and tallied six points.
The Buccaneers controlled the game's momentum after the first eight minutes of play. Barry recorded eight more points in the paint than the Spartans, and outscored their bench 8-0.
Yvonne Houston and Jen Mitchell led the Buccaneers with eight points apiece to end the first half.
The Spartans managed to get within one point of the Buccaneers with 14:45 to go in the second half, until the Buccaneers went on a 9-0 run to seal the lead.
Three Spartans scored in double figures; Moriah Hodge led the team with 14 points, Illyssa Vivo followed with 11 points, and Sarah Wickham added 10 points. Kamari Smith Grabbed a team high eight rebounds.
The Buccaneers led by at least nine points in the second half and held the Spartans to 29 percent shooting from the field for the game.
Jen Mitchell led all scorers with 15 points for the game, while teammates Shanna Suttington, Yvonne Houston and Kaley Howard all added 10 points apiece. Alexandria Zamora grabbed game high 11 rebounds.
The Spartans will travel to Saint Leo, Florida to play Saint Leo University on another SSC contest Wednesday at 5:30p.m.
The Spartans lead the all-time series 69-12.
